       Thailand Standard Hotels Directory 2008

Know for a complete range of facilities and amenities, as well as exceptional hospitality, the Thai hotel business has risen to have a role of major significance in our country's tourism industry. This has been further accentuated by initiating the necessary strategies that would create a positive image of Thailand to travellers and business people all around the world.
With this in mind and in wishing to have the hotel and resort industry recognized at the international level, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in conjunction with the Foundation for Standard and /human Resource Development in the Hospitality Industry (Hotel Standard), the Thai Hotels Association (THA), the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), and relevant educations, has implemented the Project to Establish the Thailand Hotels Standard.
This is aimed at developing the hospitality and tourism industry, as well as human resources within the hotel business to meet the internationally set standards. This initiative is also being further promoted in the Hotel Directory 2007-2008 that has been published for the benefit of key stakeholders and the general traveling public.

Therefore, on behalf of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to hotels, resorts, and the relevant public and private agencies for not only participating in the aforesaid project, but also for their continuous endeavors that in tum further promotes Thailand’s tourism industry to the global arena.

Global Mala Samui 2008

A Community Festival for a Clean and Green Samui September 21st is the United Nations International Day of Peace and organizations across the globe will hold fund and awareness-raising celebrations for the most essential issues of our times: environment, health and human rights. This is called the Global Mala Project. The Global Mala was an event intended to raise consciousness and raise funds for environmental issues on Samui.
Last year the event incurred few costs, with most businesses and individuals donating either time, money or prizes. With these funds the Mala team have mainly supported pilot educational projects. Global Mala has supported Khun Diaw (Cholnachakorn Anumart),
who some of you may know from BioRock, who has also created a group called ‘The Seedling Club’ as she is out ‘seeding’ young minds about the environment, and hoping tall strong green supporters will grow from it! Diaw’s approach is to use fun activities, but with serious intent.
We have called these activities ‘pilot projects’ because they are trial runs – we are trying to see which activities yield the most in terms of awareness and real benefits. Our hope is that this knowledge can be applied to include more children in the future if more funds are raised in the future.

       Vegetarian Festival

Vegetarian Festival is a one of the most religious festivals in Thailand. There are very less countries which can host the event this scale. It is celebrated during the ninth month of the Chinese calendar which falls in the month of September/October. It is mostly rainy season in Thailand then, but if you are a person who is interested more in enjoying the festival rather than the one who cares about the weather, you are perfect to be a part of Vegetarian Festival.
People embrace this festival with lot of enthusiasm which makes it even amazing than it is. People who yield to reckless throwing of firecrackers are many and people accept such madness with good humor. A lot of enthusiasm is needed by the people to celebrate this festival.

Vegetarian Festival

There are lot of stories on how exactly this odd festival started but the most popular is the nineteenth century version which is from Chinese immigrants who were miners. It seems the troupe of Chinese performers fell sick in Thailand while on their tour, and then they started refraining from alcohol and sex and followed a strict vegetarian diet. Hence they started recovering to the amazement of Thai People. Since then, locals started celebrating this festival each year and it went on becoming popular attracting travelers from all over the globe.

The festival is hosted in Chinese temples around Phuket for 9-days. Each temple is a host to events like climbing blade ridden ladders or walking on hot coal. A huge variety of vegetarian food is sold in the food stalls around the temples which is a huge hit with the visitors.

Processions are taken out daily to the main Chinese temple in the Phuket town from many small temples around. The main focus of the processions is shamans who go into a self-induced trance. Shamans usually pierce their cheeks with spears, swords and other sharp objects after few days of the festival. To scare away the evil spirits, marches laden with firecrackers and drums are taken along the street.

On the final night of the festival, the final ceremonious march reaches a gradual increase till midnight with lot of fireworks and smoke all around. If you are going to Thailand only to visit this festival, final day of celebrations are something you should not miss. One of the most popular viewing points is outside Metropole Hotel. The crowd which mostly starts gathering from evening amuse themselves with firecrackers. The procession finally starts coming through at around 11 pm.www.codot.net
